Chapter 11 Why is this dragon so dog-like?
The next morning, the snowstorm had not stopped.
Lynn and Kraft left Grayat and headed north to Tours.
The wind and snow howled in their ears as the two trudged through snow that reached above their calves.
Kraft led the way, his head covered in snow, his breath freezing his eyebrows.
"Lynn, how much longer do we have to walk?"
Kraft stopped and pulled open the collar of his monk's robe, revealing his muscular chest.
This guy's physical condition is truly abnormal; he can still sweat in this awful weather.
Lynn brushed the snow off his shoulders and glanced at the map: "We'll be there once we cross this border."
The journey was excessively peaceful; apart from a few snow wolves that seemed like they hadn't been weaned yet peeking around, there wasn't even a monster to warm up with.
Soon, wisps of smoke appeared in the valley ahead.
Several low stone houses were crammed into a sheltered spot, looking as if they could be buried by heavy snow at any moment.
"That's Rem Village. Let's find somewhere warm first."
Lynn put away the map.
Before even entering the village, a clear but somewhat ethereal shout drifted into my ears on the wind.
"Recruit mages! Recruit warriors!"
"As long as you have the courage and the ability, you can join the greatest adventure team of this century!"
"The objective is to defeat the Crimson Mirror Dragon! The reward is my autograph!"
Lynn picked at his ear and looked over, only to see a purple-haired girl standing on a large rock at the village entrance.
He looked to be no more than fifteen or sixteen years old, wearing an ill-fitting suit of armor. He wielded a wooden sword with great skill, but without any real technique.
As Lynn and his companion approached, the girl saw them.
She jumped off the rock, and the movement was so sudden that she almost twisted her ankle.
"Two travelers!"
The girl steadied herself, struck what she thought was a cool pose, and pointed her wooden sword straight at the sky.
"I am Ellie! The future hero! You all look very strong, are you interested in joining my team?"
Lynn looked at the wooden sword, on the hilt of which were crookedly engraved the words: Simmel II.
"Not interested."
Kraft, with his hands tucked into the sleeves of his monk's robe like an old man taking a stroll, walked straight past the girl into the village.
"Wait a minute!"
Ellie caught up and blocked their way.
"The Red Mirror Dragon is a scourge to this area! It burned down the cattle sheds and devoured the snow sheep! As men, don't you want to fight for justice?"
"In no mood."
Lynn answered very readily.
"I have money!"
Ellie gritted her teeth, pulled a deflated money pouch from her bosom, and slammed it into her palm: "This is the deposit!"
The money bag swayed.
Judging from the noise, there were probably three copper coins lying inside, no more than that.
Lynn sighed, wondering how Simmel would handle this situation.
Just then, an elderly man with a cane rushed over in a panic.
"Ellie! Stop fooling around!"
The old man grabbed the girl's arm. "Quickly apologize to the two travelers!"
"Grandpa! I'm recruiting teammates!"
Ellie struggled, "The Red Mirror Dragon is still sleeping on the mountain; this is the best opportunity to strike!"
"Your pathetic skills aren't even enough to fill a dragon's teeth!"
After scolding his granddaughter, the old man turned and bowed to Lynn and Craft.
"I'm so sorry, my daughter at home has been obsessed with hero stories and has caused you both trouble. I'm the village chief of Rem Village. If you don't mind, please come in and have a cup of hot tea to warm yourself up."
The fire in the stove inside the house was burning brightly.
Ellie was locked out, but she continued to bang on the door with her wooden sword.
"Are there really Red Mirror Dragons around here?"
Lynn asked jokingly.
"yes."
The village chief added a piece of firewood to the stove, looking worried. "That dragon flew here a month ago and has been lurking on the cliff to the north. It comes down every few days to snatch livestock, and it even burned down the neighboring village. The village hunters have gone to hunt it down, but none of them have ever returned. Even if they are commissioned, not many people dare to challenge that dragon."
Kraft held the teacup with both hands and said seriously:
"That's why your granddaughter wanted to slay the dragon."
"She's possessed."
The village chief sighed, "I grew up listening to the story of the hero Simmel. He always clamored to be a hero. A few days ago, he secretly took the kitchen knife from home to sharpen it, saying he wanted to forge a divine weapon."
Lynn put down his teacup and asked, "Where is the Red Mirror Dragon's lair?"
The village chief was stunned and asked, "You...you want to take on this commission?"
"Since I'm passing by, I might as well clean it up."
Lynn stood up. "Besides, we also need travel expenses."
Kraft also stood up and stretched his neck. "Perfect, I was a little stiff from walking."
outside the door,
Ellie pressed herself against the door to eavesdrop.
Hearing the conversation inside, they slammed the door open.
"I knew it!"
The girl rushed in, her face flushed with excitement, "I knew I was a good judge of character! You guys are definitely brave warriors!"
Don't misunderstand.
Lynn glanced at her. "We're just in it for the money."
"It's okay, it's okay!"
Ellie waved her hand dismissively, "As long as we can defeat the Red Mirror Dragon, the reason doesn't matter! I'm the captain, and you're the team members, is that alright?"
"what ever."
Lynn didn't care.
Kraft chuckled, the ancient elf with his hands tucked into his sleeves, looking at his great-granddaughter with disbelief: "Alright, Captain, then when the fighting starts, you'll have to be at the forefront."
"Leave it to me!"
Ellie patted her chest, her armor clanging loudly.
……
The wind in the northern mountains is like a knife cutting through the ground.
The snow was ankle-deep, and each step required some effort.
Ellie walked at the front.
She changed to a different sword, an iron sword that her grandfather used when he was young, rusty and with a chipped blade.
"Listen carefully, here is the battle plan."
As Ellie climbed the hill, panting, she outlined the tactics: "I'll draw fire from the front, the big guy will attack the left flank, and the one with the dual swords will handle the right. If we coordinate well, we're sure to win!"
Lynn and Kraft followed behind, keeping a distance of five meters.
"So energetic."
Kraft looked at the girl's almost unsteady gait and said.
"This girl can't even hold a sword properly."
Lynn shook his head helplessly, "If a fight really breaks out later, you'll have to keep an eye on things."
Claf nodded; this feeling of mentoring a newcomer reminded him of something from a long time ago.
Red mirror dragons are not considered rare in the northern plateau.
Its scales are hard, and it can spew out high-temperature flames, making it a natural disaster for ordinary people.
"arrive!"
Ellie suddenly stopped, lowered her body, and hid behind a boulder.
Ahead was a sheltered platform where a huge, dark red figure was dozing on the ground, its hot breath melting the surrounding snow.
"Gulp."
Ellie swallowed hard, her hand gripping the sword beginning to tremble.
"Scared?"
Lynn leaned closer.
"Who, who's afraid!"
Ellie straightened her back. "This is tactical trembling! To keep the muscles excited!"
After saying that, the girl suddenly jumped out of the cover. If there were background music, her posture would have been quite tragic.
