Chapter 16 No Hidden Dangers
Chapter 16 No Hidden Dangers
In the Special Higher Police Division, the phone rang on Takuma Mizuno's desk.
"I'm Mizuno... What?!"
Mizuno answered the phone, and before the other person could finish speaking, he stood up, his face full of disbelief.
The French Concession's Avenue Joffre police station called to report that Kobayashi Fumihiko of the Special Higher Police's intelligence unit had been hit and killed by a tram on Avenue Joffre.
"Impossible, how could Kobayashi have been hit and killed by a train?"
"Believe it or not, come and collect the body, or we'll just dump it in a cemetery to feed the stray dogs."
After finishing his sentence, the Xiafei Road police officer hung up the phone and notified the Special Higher Police to come and collect the body, but in reality, he wanted them to come and deliver money.
As for the compensation that the tram company gave to Fumihiko Kobayashi's family, it has nothing to do with them.
The body was taken to the police station; to take it away, money was required.
The person wasn't killed by the police, so what's it to them?
"Let's go to the French Concession."
Mizuno hurriedly led his men away and arrived at the Xiafei Road Police Station, where he soon saw Kobayashi in the morgue.
It was indeed Kobayashi; he looked terrible.
Being run over by such a large tram is a scene that can only be imagined, not easily described.
Takuma Mizuno was completely heartbroken. It was Kobayashi, it really was him.
Xiao Lin was fine when she left home in the morning, and she applied to him to develop an informant at the newspaper. But how did she become like this in just half a day?
What exactly happened to Xiaolin?
How did Kobayashi die?
Mizuno turned around and glared angrily at Captain Wu beside him.
"Aren't you blind?"
Captain Wu didn't give him a friendly look. So what if they were Japanese? This was the French Concession, their police station. Nobody could act recklessly here.
Mizuno suppressed his anger and slowly asked, "What I mean is, how did he get hit by the train?"
"Just like you, blind."
After Captain Wu finished speaking, he left. Normally, a few silver dollars would have been enough to take the body away, but given Okinawa's attitude, he wouldn't be able to take the body away without ten silver dollars today.
Mizuno Takuma stood there, stunned. Damn policeman, how dare he curse him?
What do you mean by "blind as he is"? Does it mean he'll get hit by a car and die someday?
Taking a deep breath, Mizuno held back.
This is the French Concession, not his territory. If he gets into a conflict with the police at the police station, he won't come out unscathed; getting beaten up would be the least of his worries.
Mizuno hurriedly took Kobayashi's body away, while several police officers came to find Captain Wu with silver dollars.
"Captain, twenty dollars."
Captain Wu told them to collect ten silver dollars, but the police officers immediately doubled the amount.
Mizuno had no interest in haggling with them; he wanted to find out the truth as soon as possible, so he paid the money directly.
"A fat sheep."
Captain Wu smacked his lips, feeling regretful. He thought to himself that if he had known this person was so important in the Special Higher Police, he should have asked for more.
Luckily, his subordinates were quick-witted and didn't ask for just ten silver dollars, otherwise they would have lost even more money.
"These are for you."
Captain Wu took half, and the rest were divided among the others, with all twenty silver dollars ending up in their pockets.
"You two don't need to come back with me. Go and find out right away how Xiaolin got into the car accident, where he was at the time, what he was doing, and who was with him."
Once in the car, Mizuno, with a grim face, gave the order: Kobayashi's accident happened on Xiafei Road. It's daytime now, and there are many people on the road, so quite a few people must have seen it.
He must find out the cause of Kobayashi's death.
"Hai."
Two subordinates got out of the car, and Mizuno drove himself back to the Special Higher Police with a gloomy face.
To make matters worse, as soon as Mizuno returned to the Special Higher Police Division, he was summoned to the division chief's office and given a scolding.
He investigated Su Yuncheng without his consent; Section Chief Saito Yujiro was unaware of it.
Tomoo Muto went to the Special Higher Police headquarters and questioned them whether they suspected him, and if so, to arrest him immediately.
Muto Tomoo was a member of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and his rank was not low. The people at the Special Higher Police headquarters dared not do anything to him and kept comforting him.
After Muto Tomoo finished his tirade, he went back, and the Special Higher Police headquarters sent a telegram to Shanghai. Only then did Saito realize that Mizuno had gotten him into trouble.
Back in her office, Mizuno felt even worse.
Today seems to be a day of bad luck. First, Kobayashi was strangely killed in a car accident, and now Muto Tomohiro knows about his secret investigation of Su Yuncheng.
Could it be that Xiao Lin was killed by Su Yuncheng?
This idea startled Mizuno. If it was really as he suspected, he couldn't imagine how Su Yuncheng could have a French tram run over and killed Kobayashi in full view of everyone.
Besides, Xiaolin is a living, breathing person; wouldn't he try to hide?
To find out the truth, we'll have to wait for his subordinates to investigate and find out the results.
The section chief has now given orders that he is forbidden from keeping an eye on Su Yuncheng. If he dares to disobey, he will be sent back to the Northeast.
If he doesn't return after making a meritorious contribution, but instead makes a mistake and is transferred back, he'll probably never be able to get ahead in his life.
At the newspaper office, Huang Chuanming received a reply from Mutō Tomohō and immediately delivered it to Su Yuncheng.
"Keep this a secret; don't let anyone else know."
After reading the telegram, Su Yuncheng burned it in front of Huang Chuanming. Muto Tomohiro told him that he had already asked the Special Higher Police and that the Special Higher Police would give them an explanation.
As for Su Yuncheng himself, Muto Tomohiro warned him to be careful, as the Special Higher Police's agents were quite capable, and since someone was following and monitoring him, they had likely made other arrangements targeting Su Yuncheng.
Muto Tomohiro instructed Su Yuncheng to conduct his own investigation, especially within the newspaper office, to ensure there were no potential risks.
This explanation is good; it will make it easier for Su Yuncheng to deal with He Wenyuan.
Su Yuncheng will not be polite to those who betray their own side.
"Editor-in-chief, the press release is ready. The French driver refused to be interviewed. We asked the passengers in the front row of the train, and they all said that the pedestrian stood on the tracks on his own and did not leave."
"Interviews with passersby have also confirmed this; this incident seems more like an accident. This is the first draft; please take a look."
Xiao Hu reported that the French driver was very arrogant, and when Xiao Wang went to conduct an interview, he directly scolded Xiao Wang and drove him away.
Fortunately, the others were quite cooperative.
Su Yuncheng took the manuscript. Xiao Hu was a female college student who had just graduated. Her handwriting was neat and her writing was quite good, but the content was too soft. She did not dare to openly criticize the French, especially the tram driver.
"That won't work. The accident wasn't accidental. The tram company has regulations that stipulate the speed limit is five kilometers per hour at intersections and areas with many pedestrians. What was the tram's speed at the time?"
Su Yuncheng snorted. French drivers are arrogant; they never like to make trams slow down.
Whether there are passengers or not, the trams always travel very fast, and the so-called timetable is just for show. Except for the morning departure and the evening return, it is never on time.
"Editor-in-chief, but we don't know what their speed was at the time?"
Xiao Hu was stunned for a moment, while Su Yuncheng shook his head: "If you don't know, don't write down the specific speed, but make it clear that this accident was caused by excessive speed, and the driver has an unshirkable responsibility."
"Yes, editor-in-chief, I'll go revise the press release right away."
Xiao Hu looked at Su Yuncheng with admiration. It had to be their editor-in-chief; he didn't care about those French people at all.
"Chuanming, go check if the photos have been developed yet. If they have, bring me a copy."
Su Yuncheng gave Huang Chuanming instructions, and Huang Chuanming left immediately.
Su Yuncheng knew better than anyone how Xiaolin died, but these despicable French drivers had caused many car accidents and harmed many people, so it wasn't entirely unfair to accuse them.
