Chapter 6 The Survivors
Chapter 6 The Survivors
As he watched the doorknob turn and the door slowly open, Lu Chen couldn't help but narrow his eyes slightly.
Zombies couldn't possibly perform such precise movements, meaning there's a survivor behind the door.
But this assessment did not put Lu Chen at ease. In the post-apocalyptic environment, encountering survivors was not necessarily a good thing.
A couple of days ago, even though the signal wasn't good, he still managed to see some news online.
After the apocalypse broke out, some people took advantage of the chaos to burn, kill, and loot, while others broke into other people's homes to plunder supplies.
In this post-apocalyptic environment, although the state apparatus is still functioning and shelters are being established in various places, it is no longer possible to punish evil as immediately as before.
The malice that lies dormant at the bottom of society is surfacing at an alarming rate.
Of course, I have no worries at all!
Lu Chen glanced back at the group behind him. Da Zhuang was holding a cleaver, and Tie Zhu stood beside him like a wall.
Against ordinary humans, it's truly one punch is enough to take down a kid.
He turned his attention back to the door of 506.
The door opened wider and wider, and a figure walked out from inside.
Lu Chen's slightly narrowed eyes involuntarily widened slowly.
The other person was wearing a well-tailored black business suit, the hem of which reached just to the knees. One button of the collar of her white shirt was undone, revealing a section of her fair collarbone.
Her long hair was loosely tied into a bun at the back of her head, with a few strands falling beside her ears. Her eyebrows and eyes were exquisite, her eyes seemed to hold water, and her red lips were slightly pursed.
She was tall with a very tight waistline, and the skirt suit accentuated her curves perfectly.
In this post-apocalyptic world teeming with zombies and stained with blood, a white-collar woman who looked like she had just left an office building suddenly appeared, creating a jarring contrast that left Lu Chen momentarily at a loss for how to react.
The woman's gaze first fell on Lu Chen, and then she looked at the five zombies behind him.
Her gaze shifted from Dazhuang to Tiezhu, from Tiezhu to Aunt Wang, and then from Aunt Wang to the other two zombies.
Only after confirming that they were all standing quietly in place and had no intention of pouncing on her did she relax slightly.
His tense shoulders slumped, and his fingers loosened their grip on the doorknob.
Lu Chen also recognized the other person.
He recognized the woman in front of him; she had just moved in this month, and he happened to be out on the day she moved.
I saw her twice more during work hours, once in the elevator and once in the lobby downstairs. We just brushed past each other both times without even exchanging greetings.
As for their names, jobs, and such, I know nothing about them.
However, seeing that it was a woman who opened the door, rather than some vicious thug, Lu Chen relaxed a lot.
At least we don't have to take action right away.
He opened his mouth, about to explain the current situation, but before he could speak, the woman opposite him spoke first.
"Don't do it yet!"
Her voice wasn't loud, but she spoke very quickly, as if she was afraid that if she spoke too slowly, something irreversible would happen.
"I know you're a good person."
Lu Chen's mouth was still open, the words stuck in his throat.
He was speechless.
He never intended to make a move, so how come in the other person's mouth it's as if he's about to command zombies to charge at any moment?
Moreover, the term "good person" sounds like giving someone a friend card.
He opened his mouth, wanting to explain that he had no intention of making a move. But the other person's next words completely stunned him.
"I am a superhuman!"
The woman spoke calmly, not as if she were boasting, but as if she were stating a fact.
"I possess the ability to sense things. I can sense everything you do."
Lu Chen frowned.
Sensory ability? To what extent can it sense things?
The woman seemed to sense his confusion and continued speaking.
"I sensed everything you did in the room. You trapped the zombie in the iron cage, cut the ropes to make the wardrobe fall, and reached out to touch the zombie to activate your powers—I sensed all of that."
"Ten seconds. You spent ten seconds controlling the first zombie. Then you dressed it, put a scarf around its neck, and stuffed a kitchen knife into its mouth. You even made it do a set of punches and recorded a video."
She paused, her red lips pursing slightly.
"To be honest, I didn't expect anyone to have such a unique ability to control zombies. And when capturing the first zombie, he was both brave and resourceful. Although the whole process was tense, he did every step very steadily."
She raised her eyes and looked directly at Lu Chen.
"My special ability is not only to sense what is happening around me, but also to sense the good and evil in people's hearts."
"I can sense that you're a good person!"
The other party's words contained a great deal of information.
She could sense what was happening around her and the good and evil in people's hearts. If what she said was true, then this superpower was more practical than she had imagined.
She can know what's happening on the entire floor just by sitting in room 506.
It's practically a human radar.
The woman took a deep breath, straightened her back, as if she were making an important decision.
"Let me introduce myself, my name is Shen Qingci."
"I want to join your team!"
After saying that, she stood quietly at the door and didn't say anything more.
Her delicate face was expressionless, revealing no emotional fluctuations.
But if you look closely, you'll see that her body is tense, her shoulders are slightly hunched, her fingers are clenched into fists at her sides, and her heels are unconsciously grinding lightly on the ground.
She's nervous!
Lu Chen did not respond immediately.
He was processing the information the other person had just shared.
First of all, it's true that the other party is a superhuman.
If she didn't have sensory abilities, she couldn't possibly explain what she had just done so clearly.
The process of capturing Dazhuang and the details of recording the video are not things that can be fabricated casually.
Secondly, her superpower is indeed very practical.
With her ability to sense her surroundings and distinguish between good and evil, taking her with you when you go out is like having a living radar.
She can sense in advance where there are zombies, where it's safe, and which routes are safe to take, which is incredibly convenient in the apocalypse.
Moreover, that ability to sense people's hearts is also terrifying.
If you really want to build a team, this ability is more useful than any offensive superpower.
She could tell at a glance who had ulterior motives and who could be trusted. What the team feared most was not the zombies outside, but the internal rifts.
but--
"I never said I was going to build a team."
Lu Chen finally spoke.
Shen Qingci's expression froze for a moment.
Lu Chen was telling the truth; for him, family was the most important thing.
My parents and younger sister are still in a village under Ningcheng City, 1500 kilometers away from here.
From the moment the apocalypse began, he had only one goal in mind: to go back!
He had no intention of staying here any longer, nor did he intend to form any team. Clearing out the fifth floor was merely a means to subdue more zombies before figuring out how to leave.
After all, he couldn't possibly convince anyone else to risk traveling more than 1500 kilometers with him to rescue his family.
Now it was Shen Qingci's turn to be stunned.
She remained silent for several seconds, as if processing the meaning of Lu Chen's words.
Then she frowned and asked, "Why?"
"The nation has announced Project Dawn. For those with superpowers, this is absolutely a ladder to success. Within the military system, they might accomplish in a few months what others take over a decade to achieve."
She paused, a hint of confusion in her voice, "Aren't bestowing titles and honors the most desirable things for you men?"
"Project Dawn?" Lu Chen raised an eyebrow. "What is that?"
Upon hearing Lu Chen's question, Shen Qingci realized what was going on and showed a look of sudden understanding.
"This is a plan specifically designed for us superhumans, and it was only announced on the official website this morning. The signal is too weak right now, so most people probably haven't seen it yet."
She stepped aside to move away from the doorway and tilted her head slightly towards the room.
"My window faces the cell tower, and my phone still has two bars of signal. Why don't you... come in and take a look?"
