Chapter 52 Nuclear Missile Launch
Chapter 52 Nuclear Missile Launch
Tony's eyes darkened. Shendu's answer was within his expectations. Given Fury's frenzied state at the time, even if Shendu was trusted by him, he would still personally inspect the hostages. Shendu couldn't possibly tamper with this.
"You can give life to the inanimate. If I find Pepper, can you help me resurrect her?" Tony's tone rarely contained a hint of pleading.
The Holy Lord casually replied, "Of course, that's simple, but what benefit can you bring me?"
"I can join you," Tony said.
Sensing Wanda's fluctuating emotions, Shendu used the Mind Stone to forcefully suppress her anger; now was not the time for her to act.
"Just a verbal promise? I need to see your sincerity," the Holy Lord said calmly.
Tony pointed to the two people behind Shendu: "Finding them for you is the greatest show of my sincerity."
"Why do you think this is your sincerity? And where did you get the idea that they have nothing to do with me?" Shendu mocked. "Tony, you're too arrogant."
From a distance, Hawkeye could only see Tony standing in front of Shendu talking about something, but he couldn't hear the specifics of what they were saying.
"Clint, things are getting bad. Banner is going crazy in the military, and that old bastard Ross sees Hulk as his life's work and isn't using any effective means." Fury's voice came through the communicator.
"Don't worry about Tony for now. Tony should be able to delay Shendu for a while. Go to the military and help Ross face reality."
Hawkeye frowned deeply: "Chief, the situation is bad. It seems Tony has turned against us. He just blocked the arrow I fired."
After a few seconds of silence, Fury said through the communicator, "Yeah, I understand. I thought of that when I went to check on the safety of the previous hostages but Pepper wasn't there."
"Don't worry about this anymore, I'll take care of everything."
Hawkeye glanced one last time in the direction of Tony and Shendu. According to the plan, Steve and Natasha were also there. He wondered if Tony had exposed them yet.
Tony looked at Natasha and Steve standing behind Shendu, whose appearances were gradually changing into two ninjas.
Tony chuckled self-deprecatingly: "I see, that explains everything. You needed someone to make contact while you were operating within S.H.I.E.L.D. I hadn't been able to find anyone to work with. I never expected this."
The Holy Lord replied, "I didn't expect it to be them? I already switched them out?"
"Tony, I'll say it again, you're too arrogant, so arrogant that you only believe what you see with your own eyes."
Hawkeye ran as fast as he could towards the military base, which was just a few kilometers away. He spotted Steve and Natasha just as he was about to arrive.
The two stood in the middle of the road, looking as if they had been waiting for a long time: "We've finally arrived. Fury told us to wait for you here."
Hawkeye looked at the two people in front of him warily: "You haven't pledged allegiance to the Holy Lord?"
Natasha's face turned cold: "What do you mean? We betrayed anyone?"
Steve chimed in, "I swear to God, I haven't betrayed anyone."
"Fury is at the military base up ahead. It seems Tony is having some kind of problem. Fury urgently recalled us, citing the need to avoid excessive casualties," Steve said, raising his shield. "Now it seems Tony has betrayed us."
"Why has Banner gone crazy again? Wasn't Ross already taken care of when he took him away?" Hawkeye asked.
"That's just the military's explanation. We all know how much Ross values Hulk," Steve explained from the side.
A loud bang came from the direction of the military base.
"It looks like time is running out."
The military base is now a ruin, and Hulk's roar can be heard several kilometers away.
Ross stood in the command room, staring at the screen with a grim expression.
"I'll say it again! No armor-piercing shells! No heavy artillery! Nobody is allowed to damage that thing!"
"Sir!" an adjutant couldn't hold back any longer. "We've already lost four armored vehicles and seventeen soldiers are seriously wounded. He's a killing machine now!"
"I said, no! Those are assets we spent decades acquiring, who among you dares to challenge us!"
A loud crash interrupted him. Hulk had already broken through the second line of defense; those concrete barriers were nothing more than ordinary mud bricks in front of him.
Ross noticed that he seemed to be looking for something.
Hulk looked around with red eyes, finally fixing his gaze on the command vehicle.
"Sir, we need to evacuate!" the adjutant grabbed Ross's arm.
Ross shook off his adjutant's hand: "Bring up the tranquilizer darts!"
"The tranquilizer darts are useless now! Can't you tell?!"
The adjutant wanted to continue persuading him, but then he noticed that Hulk had stopped, and a man's figure appeared behind Hulk.
Hulk slowly turned around, revealing a cruel smile to the figure, like a hunter discovering long-lost prey.
"Fury, what the hell are you doing here? Didn't we say before that we'd take over Hulk?" Ross's voice came from the command vehicle.
Fury ignored him, raising his head to stare into Hulk's eyes: "Banner, you're not out of control, you're being controlled, aren't you? You've already met Shendu."
The only response he received was Hulk's fist.
The punch was dodged, and Hulk let out a roar from his throat.
"It seems that's indeed the case."
An arrow flew towards him, and Hulk instinctively raised his hands to block it.
The arrow pierced Hulk's arm and penetrated deep into his temple, causing Hulk to let out a deafening scream.
Immediately afterwards, a shield flew in and hit the arrow precisely.
Hulk let out another scream, then collapsed unconscious.
Ross stared at the lifeless Hulk on the ground and roared, "Furry! What have you done?!"
Fury's tone was calm: "He's been controlled by the Mind Stone. You can't subdue him. You can only accept the outcome."
Fury changed the subject, saying sarcastically, "The results you're talking about are inherently unstable. Even without the Holy Lord's intervention, he might have ended up like this. This is the best outcome for him right now."
"Fury, do you know what you're saying?!" Ross roared.
Fury ignored Ross's anger and turned to meet up with Hawkeye and the others who had arrived: "Take over the military. Everything here is under my command."
Ross, feeling ignored, grew even angrier: "You're like this, Tony is like this, and that so-called Holy Lord is like this too. You don't think the military is someone you can just manipulate, do you?"
Ross turned around and slammed his fist hard on the button next to him. This was the repaired nuclear launch button, which Ross had moved to the command vehicle after the repair and kept next to him.
As the alarm sounded, Fury, as if remembering something, asked Natasha, "Where did you put the core control unit for nuclear deterrence?"
Natasha replied, "As you instructed, the military will take over."
Fury looked at Hulk lying on the ground: "Damn it! Ross's gone mad!"
