Chapter 27 is about Batman.
Chapter 27 is about Batman.
Jung Eun didn't think Jason was such a careless person.
After getting the phone, he clearly treasured it immensely. He took out the lining of his sleeve and wiped it again and again until the screen was so clean it could reflect light before he finally put it away with satisfaction and stuffed it into the inside pocket of his clothes.
With a cell phone, he walked much more steadily, occasionally pressing his hand to his chest, anxiously checking to confirm the phone's existence.
How could my phone have broken so easily in less than a day?
Jung Eun asked him earnestly, "Is someone bullying you? I can help you."
"No, no," Jason waved his hands repeatedly. "It's nothing, really, it's fine, I can handle it."
Seeing Jason's strong reaction, Zheng En had no choice but to give up.
He changed his approach, "So how can I ask you for a favor? How about this, I'll buy you another phone another day. Where do you live? I'll deliver it to you. Make sure you keep it safe this time."
Jason opened his mouth as if to speak, but Jung Eun anticipated this and interrupted him.
"You can't refuse. It's not easy to find a fast-acting errand runner in the East District. Don't think I'm being kind. Once you have a phone, you have to be available whenever I call."
Jason was stunned by these bullying words. He could hear the concern hidden beneath the surface, but he didn't know how to react. He could only nod, his voice choked with emotion, "I understand."
It was almost lunchtime, and Jason was invited by Zheng En to stay and have a hearty meal.
Seeing the sky about to darken outside, he didn't dare to linger. Zheng En accompanied him back, watching his jogging figure disappear into the depths of the alley.
Most of the houses here are dilapidated and dangerous buildings on the verge of collapse. They are old and remote, and have long been abandoned.
The original owner of the house may have moved away, or they may have died due to reasons such as smoking marijuana or gang fights. In places like the East District, as soon as a house becomes vacant, someone will move in immediately.
Jason knocked on the door, and immediately a child peeked out from the crack in the door.
The door was just a worn-out sheet of iron, and because it had been hit hard, some parts were dented, making it impossible to fit snugly into the door frame.
Through the crack, those inside could see outside, and those outside could see the haphazardly wrapped iron chains in the crack of the door.
After confirming the visitor's identity, the clanging of chains echoed from inside.
"So, Jason, did that guy do anything to you?"
The child who opened the door looked him up and down nervously. Noticing a red dot on Jason's neck, he immediately reached up to pull at his collar. "Why is yours red? Was that person a pedophile?"
"What?! A pedophile! Jason, are you alright?"
"So that's where Jason got the money to buy the medicine?"
As a group of children gathered around, chattering away, each one of them was about to strip him naked.
Jason quickly covered his clothes, shouting, "Wait, wait, wait!"
"Don't listen to Casey's nonsense! He's a good guy, I'm perfectly fine!" Jason grimaced as he broke free from the group of children. "It's just a mosquito bite, you're all making a big fuss over nothing!"
The children scattered dejectedly, "It's all Casey's fault!"
"Casey is really something!"
The girl called Casey scratched her head sheepishly. "I was just concerned about Jason. He's been so nice to me for no reason."
"What about the phone? What was his reaction?" Casey followed Jason closely. "It's all my fault. If you hadn't been trying to save me, you wouldn't have fallen and broken the phone."
She was worried about Jason all day; secondhand phones were a significant sum for them.
She was afraid that Zheng En's kindness to Jason was for ulterior motives, and even more afraid that Jason would be beaten up because of the broken phone.
"He's different from those people."
Jason knew what his companions were afraid of: recently, homeless people had been disappearing, and when homeless children from the nearby neighborhoods went missing, their companions would come and inquire.
And those people's hands were already outstretched.
When Jason came back yesterday, he rushed out without thinking because he saw Casey being forcibly put into a bread truck.
During the fight, the phone fell to the ground and was kicked a long way.
When I picked it up, the phone was no longer working.
"Those people who arrest people may come back at any time, so be careful."
Jason was still shaken by what happened yesterday. If he hadn't been carrying a knife and if a bat-like shadow hadn't descended from the sky and scared the people away, who knows what might have happened.
"Now that we have enough food and blankets, don't go out at night unless absolutely necessary."
Jason was glad he met Zheng En. With money, they could live a better life and wouldn't have to risk going out at night anymore. "Don't take the food from the aid organization. Those people will pretend to be from the aid organization."
Jason wasn't the oldest among them, but he was smart and resourceful enough to bring back more food than the others, and he made the biggest contribution to the group.
The children trusted him and unanimously agreed.
Perhaps because of what happened yesterday, the streets here are very quiet today, and the children had a peaceful night.
As night fell, the bright moonlight spilled across the ground, and a dark shadow resembling a giant bat wing swept through the gap between the buildings, flashing by in an instant.
Somewhere in Gotham, there are scattered homeless people on street corners.
A white van drove up from the street, its body painted with the logo of an aid organization.
As soon as the car stopped, a homeless man got up and walked over.
Staff in white uniforms distributed food in order, and soon five or six homeless people gathered around.
They were distributing bowls of oatmeal porridge in buckets to the homeless.
This food cannot be preserved, so the homeless can only drink it while it's hot.
A short while later, someone collapsed to the ground.
"Quickly, bring them all here!"
Seeing that the drug was working, the people stopped pretending. Some tried to escape, but were quickly caught and subdued.
Before he lost consciousness uncontrollably, he bit the staff member's hand hard.
The bitten staff member cried out in surprise, and then saw a dark shadow in the sky.
"Holy crap, it's Batman!" someone exclaimed.
The leader gripped his pistol, aimed at the shadowy figure, and fired two shots, but both missed.
He gritted his teeth, staring at the homeless man on the ground who hadn't yet loaded the bread into the cart, and decisively gave the order, "Move!"
The group hurriedly got into the car, and just as the driver was about to start the engine, they heard a loud noise coming from the roof.
"Fuck you, you bat freak!"
The people inside the carriage were cursing loudly. This wasn't the first time their plans had been thwarted, and their pent-up anger over the past few days had driven them to fire shots at the ceiling.
The black figure rolled off the roof of the van, watching it disappear down the street. He patted his dusty armor, his cloak hanging to the ground.
On the top of the bread cart, a locator is firmly attached.
