Chapter 13: Good news: It brought hope. Bad news: It was hope for the Green Goblin.
Chapter 13: Good news: It brought hope. Bad news: It was hope for the Green Goblin.
"Didn't you see the news?" Dr. Dara asked.
"What news?"
Connors had been spending most of his time in the lab and had barely contacted the outside world, so he had no idea what the other party was saying.
Dr. Dara took out his phone and played him a video.
In the video.
A masked monster dressed in a red and blue tight-fitting uniform leaps and bounds between the city's skyscrapers, shooting out something resembling spider silk from his wrists to stick to the building surfaces, performing a series of dangerous and difficult stunts.
Connors frowned. "This is scientific. An ordinary person's body simply cannot withstand such a huge pull. His muscle tissue should be torn, and his spine should break from the sudden drop from such a height..."
Dara put her phone back in her pocket and asked, "Have you conducted human trials in your cross-species genetic experiments?"
"Of course not," Connors said. "The only one who has received the serum right now is Freddie."
Dara stared into Connors' eyes, seemingly trying to determine the truthfulness of his words.
"You suspect I leaked it?" Connors asked, somewhat angrily.
"No, as far as I know, the last research on spider genes was led by Richard Parker, and you didn't learn anything from him..." Dara said.
"What do you mean I didn't learn anything?!" Connors interrupted. "He packed his bags and left, destroying all his research. I've already done quite well to get to this point!"
"Then arrange human trials immediately. Norman is very excited about seeing Spider-Man," Dara said.
Connors remained rational and decisively rejected Dara's request.
The truth of science lies in being grounded in reality; if you try to achieve something in one step, you'll only end up dead!
"His excitement is his business. The current stage is only at the mammal level, and it will take some time before we reach the primate level."
"But he's dying." Dara looked at him calmly.
"And," Dara stepped forward and straightened Connors's cuffs, specifically choosing the cuff of his missing arm.
"He has already spent a lot of time and money on this research, and now a 'new human' who calls himself Spider-Man has appeared in the public eye, and you're telling me that the project is only limited to mammals?"
"Isn't this a bit inappropriate?"
Connors angrily pulled his sleeve back, preventing Dara from touching it.
"So you're still blaming me for leaking the experiment, allowing a stranger to gain genetic abilities?!"
Dara raised his hands to his chest, his expression slightly innocent: "I didn't say that. I just wanted to tell you that time is running out. Human experiments must be arranged immediately. I'm still investigating the birth of Spider-Man."
Connors maintained his stance: "I cannot agree to begin human trials now; there are too many unknowns!"
"Then he will die." Dara's voice rose a few decibels.
"Everyone dies, even Norman Osborn," Connors said calmly, as if describing a perfectly ordinary fact.
"Ugh."
Dara sighed. "Kurt, don't you understand? All you have to do is advertise that this is some kind of flu vaccine, and a large number of test subjects will be waiting for you."
"Do you even know what you're saying?!"
Connors could no longer tolerate it; he absolutely would not allow his scientific truths to be trampled on like this.
"We are scientists; our goal should be to benefit society, not to harm others' lives for someone's selfish gain!"
"I will never allow my experiments to harm society so carelessly!"
"no way!"
After finishing his speech, Connors' face flushed slightly, and he prepared to leave the lab immediately.
But as he walked past Dara, she grabbed his mutilated arm.
"Of course I know what I'm talking about, Kurt."
Dara said, "You're overreacting... You're exactly the same as Richard was back then. Look at what happened to him, and then look at what you've gained."
Connors remained silent.
"Time is of the essence, Connors. There's no need to waste your energy on something meaningless."
"I still stand by my previous position: I will never begin human experimentation without authorization."
The two sides were like two oxen, each sticking to their own opinion, and neither could convince the other.
Dara's patience was also worn down by Connors's repeated "glorious and righteous" pronouncements.
"Whatever you want." Dara picked up the lizard serum on the table, ready to take charge of the human experiments himself.
"The serum belongs to the Osborn Group. The agreement is very clear, and I believe you will not argue with me about this anymore."
"And you will never again have that arm you long for."
Dara looked at him. "I'm firing you on behalf of Norman Osborn right now. Get the lab cleaned up by tonight and make room for the others."
Dara turned around, glanced at Freddy the white rat in the cage, and said, "Oh right, don't forget to take this rat with you."
Seeing that Connors seemed to be about to say something, Dara held up a finger and waved it in front of him.
"Don't ask why. Blame that Spider-Man who suddenly appeared. He's the one who gave Norman hope to live."
"..."
After saying that, Dara left the laboratory, leaving Connors alone with Freddy the white rat in the cage.
And high above outside the window, in their blind spot.
A crow abandoned its flapping flight and instead covered its head with its paws, plummeting to the ground with a whoosh.
"Damn it, why did things have to go this way!"
......
"Damn it, what do you mean I gave Harry's father hope to live?!"
Peter held his head in his hands and stood there, stunned.
After sharing his visual memories, Oz breathed a sigh of relief, plopped down on Peter's shoulder, and said:
"I don't understand. Although I know your existence does bring hope to people, bringing them hope is a bit like hell."
Oz certainly didn't expect things to go according to the original plot, especially since he had already led Spider-Man to catch Uncle Ben's killer.
In this way, Peter would not retaliate by searching for a similar-looking killer, and without retaliatory behavior, there would be no scene later where Peter argues with his father-in-law.
Peter changed course and immediately decided to skip class, as he had to go to the Osborne Building himself.
"Oh my god, I have so many questions now... Why are they bringing up my father? What exactly happened back then?"
Peter walked quickly and soon arrived at a secluded corner, where he began to take off his clothes, revealing his spider suit underneath.
Oz asked, "I don't know. By the way, do you use talcum powder?"
"Damn it...this doesn't matter at all!" Peter yelled.
His mind is in a mess right now, but this messiness is more like he's received too much information at once and hasn't had a chance to process it yet.
Through Oz's shared vision and memory, he saw Dr. Connors' attitude and instantly realized that his previous opinion of the doctor was correct.
He was indeed a kind scientist.
but......
Blame Spider-Man.
What does this have to do with him?
Peter was already dressed in his spider suit. He flicked his wrist, a wisp of spider silk shot out, and then he leaped into the air.
"Please don't turn into a giant lizard, Doctor, please!"
