Chapter 64 What level wizard are you?
After that, Lucas spent another pleasant two weeks in Diagon Alley.
Free time during the day. Mornings are mainly for collecting reader mail, exploring Diagon Alley with Hannah, and training Pepper to distinguish the flavors of various ingredients and seasonings.
In the afternoon, Lucas set up his stall at the entrance of Gringotts. His stall was becoming increasingly famous, and every time he set up, there were already many wizards waiting in line.
As promised, the young wizards Susan Burns, Ernie McMillan, and Zacharys Smith came almost every day and became very close friends with Lucas.
Neville also came once, but not because his study progress had passed his grandmother's test; rather, his great-uncle brought him to Diagon Alley to buy a huge toad.
Lucas stared at the toad named "Lever," his lips twitching slightly. Seeing Neville holding it in his arms like a precious treasure, the other friends all moved away.
The stall was a huge success, selling out in just two or three hours and generating a substantial daily income. Lucas also wrote a letter to his grandfather telling him that he was doing well and that the wizards' money was inexhaustible, so he couldn't bear to go home anytime soon.
Incidentally, this was Pepper's first time undertaking a delivery mission. Surprisingly, upon its return, it raved about Finley McGregor, praising the old man for his tough, masculine demeanor.
When Lucas returned from closing up shop, he cooked dinner for the group at the Leaky Cauldron, which was met with rave reviews. Then it was time for lessons, where he received spell instruction and practical training from Tonks, and also studied first-year basic courses on his own, along with the magic books given to him by the kind wizards.
So far, thanks to the combined instruction of Tonks and Lily, Lucas has learned several spells. These include the "Unlocking Charm," the "Levitation Charm" that Ellie used to save him, the "Flickering Charm" for nighttime illumination, the "Restore to Originality" for repairing damaged items, the "Clean Up" for cleaning up trash, as well as the evil curse "Tickling Charm" and the curse "Petrify All".
Tonks was very surprised by Lucas's learning progress, and thought that his ability to quickly mobilize his "desire" and accurately replicate spellcasting actions was a genius thing, which made his learning speed far exceed that of ordinary first-year students.
Today, August 25th, Tonks will give Lucas his last lesson of the summer.
Because Tonks successfully passed Mad-Eye Moody's test and was accepted as his student, receiving initial instruction, he will be leaving London with him tomorrow to begin his Auror training.
Lucas was genuinely happy for her. Everyone said that Moody was a very powerful legendary Auror who had killed countless dark wizards and captured half of Azkaban's prisoners.
With his guidance, Tonks will surely become an excellent Auror!
The two arrived at the backyard of the Leaky Cauldron.
"Today's lesson will last all day; I'm going to teach you practical combat." Tonks' face was unusually serious. "This is something most wizards lack. Many adult wizards who have graduated for years can't even cast a single Ironclad Charm, and when faced with danger, they can only leave it to fate."
"Lucas, I hope you'll graduate from Hogwarts at least as a level five wizard. Of course, given the talent you've shown, I think level six is also possible."
Lucas was somewhat puzzled: "What are levels five and six? Are wizards ranked? I've only heard of the OWL Common Wizard Rank Exam and the NEWT Ultimate Wizard Exam, but those are professional qualification exams, and the results affect career choices. It's probably not the same thing you're talking about."
Tonks nodded: "Of course not. The wizard rankings I'm referring to aren't official descriptions; they're rarely seen on paper. Rather, they're rankings that the Aurors have come to agree upon over the years, used to measure a wizard's combat ability."
"Speaking of this, we must first talk about the Hogwarts textbook, 'Standard Spells' by Miranda Gossack. The 'Standard Spells' textbook is divided into seven levels, one level per year. For example, you are currently learning 'Standard Spells, Elementary,' and in your second year you will learn 'Standard Spells, Level Two.'"
"The wizard combat level I mentioned is directly linked to this standard spellbook. Generally speaking, a wizard who can fully master all the spells in the 'Standard Spellbook, Elementary' is considered a Level 1 wizard, a wizard who can fully master the 'Standard Spellbook, Level 2' is a Level 2 wizard, and so on, up to a Level 7 wizard."
Lucas listened intently, then suddenly realized, "Wait a minute, if Hogwarts graduates studied for seven years and learned all seven volumes of the Standard Spells, wouldn't they all be level seven wizards?"
"What's wrong with you, Lucas? Learning something and mastering it are two different things, and mastering it and completely controlling it are two different things," Tonks said. "The Standard Spells get progressively harder. The 'Ironclad Spell' I just mentioned is in the fifth level, the sixth level is the Silent Spell, and the seventh level is when your magical skill is so high that you've mastered silent, wandless spellcasting!"
"Let alone students, many adult wizards only reach level three or four in their entire lives."
Lucas understood that, just like subjects such as calculus, real analysis, and differential geometry, even with textbooks and renowned teachers around, many students still find themselves completely lost and unable to learn them.
"So, Tonks, what level are you at now?" Lucas asked curiously.
Tonks proudly stroked his hair: "As for me, I'm already somewhere between level five and six. With Mr. Moody's guidance, I'm sure I'll reach level six!"
Level 5 to 6 means you've grasped the basics of silent spells, but you're still quite inexperienced.
"Oh...so you're not even at level six yet..." Lucas drawled.
Tonks, puffing out his cheeks, slicked back his hair: "You brat, wait until you reach level five!"
But to be fair, Lucas is truly the most magically gifted student she has ever seen. As long as he studies diligently and keeps up with the pace, graduating at level five will definitely not be a problem.
"There are only seven levels in total?" Lucas continued, "Are there any levels above seven?"
"Of course," Tonks said wistfully. "Above the seventh level is the [Legendary]. There are only a handful of [Legendary]s in the world, and the most powerful one is universally acknowledged to be our Headmaster, Professor Dumbledore. So you should cherish your time studying at Hogwarts."
Lucas couldn't help but gasp when he thought of the kind, calm, and wise headmaster who looked like a powerful wizard.
I see. No wonder everyone says Dumbledore is the greatest wizard of our time.
"Has Mr. Moody reached legendary status?"
Tonks shook his head: "While I admire Mr. Moody, his skill level is still some distance from that of a legend. Alright, you have too many questions. Time is precious; we only have one day left."
"This morning, I will teach you the key to practical application."
"This afternoon, we'll conduct a live-fire exercise!"
