Chapter 1 Prologue: "I think I understand everything"
July 7, 1983, is my seventh birthday. My father took me back to our ancestral home in Fuyuki, where I met my grandfather and uncle for the first time.
My father said we came back here so that my grandfather could help me get medical treatment. It turns out my grandfather was a doctor.
On July 8, 1983, my uncle came to see me early in the morning. He said he would take me to have a good time in Fuyuki. He was in a really good mood today, but the way he looked at me was a bit strange.
I asked him why, was it because my illness couldn't be cured? He didn't speak, but just looked at me with an even stranger look, both relieved and guilty.
By the way, his name is Kariya, Matou Kariya. And my name is Matou Ike.
My father passed away on July 12, 1983. He left alone, without me. I was unhappy.
But I can understand him. After all, he has a lot of businesses to manage at home, while I have to stay here for treatment.
Of course, once I recover, I'll definitely make my father make it up to me. I've decided he'll treat me to a super-sized sundae as compensation.
On July 15, 1983, three days had passed since my father passed away, and I hadn't seen my grandfather for eight days. I heard that he was preparing for my upcoming treatment.
But my eyes just hurt a little, do I really need to prepare for this long?
On July 16, 1983, Uncle Kariya brought me to this park again. He wasn't really there to take me out to play; he just wanted to chat with that woman named Aoi.
But that woman is about to get married.
On July 18, 1983, Yan Ye left. He hugged me for a long time before he left, and his eyes still looked so strange.
I guess it's because of the woman who's getting married.
On July 20, 1983, Grandpa said that it could begin the next day.
Although Grandpa's appearance is rather rough, he still loves me. Looking forward to my super giant sundae!
July 28, 1983, bugs! Bugs everywhere! An endless swarm of bugs!!!
August 27, 1983, it hurts so much! It really hurts! A bug crawled into my eye!!!
That old guy said I got along very well with the insects, and that I was able to stay energetic for a month during the initial adaptation phase.
I'd rather die than do that.
Father, where are you? Why did you leave me here?
March 4, 1984, almost half a year had passed since I first stepped into the insect room.
I heard from the old man that the initial adaptation phase of the magic circuit modification is over, and in a week I will step into the true realm of magic belonging to the Matou family.
How ridiculous! Is the so-called demonic realm just about playing with insects?
Come to think of it, I've been crawling on by bugs for half a year now, and it seems like I missed a New Year's celebration? I wonder how my parents spent it this year.
However, we'll be entering a new phase next week, and the old man told me to prepare myself mentally in advance.
What other methods could he possibly use besides insects? Insects are nothing. After what I've experienced over the past six months, what do I have to be afraid of?
May 17, 1984, you bastard! You bastard!! It hurts! It's unbearable!! How dare he!!! How dare he do this! Insects, tearing through my skin, burrowing into my body! All sorts of insects envelop me!
Ouch! What does that old man want?! Is he going to kill me?!
On September 11, 1984, Kariya returned. Of course he would return. The woman he loved most was getting married in a few years. As his childhood sweetheart, he might even become her chief officiant (the officiant at a Japanese Shinto wedding).
November 12, 1984. The old man was in a terrible mood today. Although he already had a lifeless face, with dead skin and wrinkles piled up, making him look like he had one foot in a coffin, I still knew he felt like he'd eaten shit... because the bugs were biting him harder today, and he was venting!
Good heavens, this mummy actually has emotions! I need to figure out what's making him unhappy so I can annoy him later.
On March 30, 1985, the old man told me that starting tomorrow, I would need to systematically learn magic and attend the elementary school entrance ceremony.
July 31, 1985, summer vacation arrived. After a semester, I hadn't made any friends.
After all, they were talking about the Kamen Rider storylines that their families had recorded for them after they got home from school.
Should I talk to them about which type of Crest Bug bite hurts the most? Fortunately, school is easy, so I don't have to worry about getting bitten by bugs.
Why does school end so early? I really want to stay at school a little longer.
On February 11, 1986, Tokiomi Tohsaka, the head of the Tohsaka family, held his wedding banquet. His new wife was named Aoi Zenjou, now known as Aoi Tohsaka. She was also Kariya Matou's childhood friend.
It's quite strange that the Tohsaka and Matou families, both long-established and prestigious magic families, would both take a liking to the same woman.
It's a bit of a shame that we didn't see Matou Kariya as the chief officiant at the wedding; he was away on a business trip at the time, and that was all he could do.
On March 15, 1986, I had barely mastered the three categories of magic: alchemy, divination, and curses. I couldn't even get past the basics of healing magic. Only my progress in spirit summoning magic was rapidly improving.
The old man was somewhat dissatisfied with this, but he didn't show it immediately, believing that I would soon suffer the consequences.
On March 16, 1986, I quickly experienced the hardship. The time I spent in the insect room was doubled, and the insects were more aggressive than before. I could clearly feel my body being torn apart and repaired. Apart from the pain, there seemed to be nothing else.
Fortunately, I still have my own head.
On September 9, 1986, my talent in spirit possession magic became rapidly apparent, which can now be considered a gift.
At the same time, I started learning insect magic.
On January 13, 1987, Old Bug informed me that the Bug Room project would enter the next stage the next day, with the goal of unlocking my Magic Eye.
He would never talk to me about his purpose before.
As for the magic eyes, the old bug judged that I possessed a pair of gem-grade magic eyes, the function of which is to analyze knowledge and decipher magic.
The Demon Eye is divided into five levels: Azure Jade, Crimson Jade, Gold, Gemstone, and Rainbow.
Actually, I didn't have any natural talent as a magician. It's just that my magic eye was slightly activated when I was six years old.
The Magic Eye, as a special type of magic circuit, opened up other blocked magic circuits in my body when activated.
My father used this to sell me for a good price, gaining some of the real power that a family head possesses. Uncle Kariya also gained the opportunity to choose his own life through this.
Of course, all of this was told to me by the old bug, and I can easily imagine his purpose in telling me all this.
By the way, I now call him Old Bug. I feel that "old guy" and "old thing" are no longer enough to describe him.
On February 3, 1987, the Tohsaka family's child was born. My uncle, Matou Kariya, was pacing back and forth in the park. He probably felt that he should be waiting outside the delivery room instead of in the park.
On April 7, 1987, I discovered an unusual use of spirit possession in my home library... to possess one's past life and learn past techniques.
What was I like in my past life?
On April 16, 1987, Old Bug said that he had figured out the direction of the magic circuits in my Magic Eye, and tomorrow would be the day to open the Magic Eye.
Then they dripped something like a liquid into my eyes and told me to close them until I opened my magic eye tomorrow.
At first, I was very confused as to when he started targeting my eyes.
Until I remembered the first time I entered the insect room.
On April 17, 1987, I skillfully entered the insect room. Even with my eyes closed, I could easily walk down the stairs without bumping into anything.
The swarm seemed more silent than ever before. The arthropods, which were usually the noisiest, seemed to have vanished, and even the worms' wriggling sounds were only heard sporadically.
But I still stepped into the insect pool.
The insects went mad. The brief moment of calm was just an illusion, a false impression, a suppression before the storm, a restraint before the indulgence of desires.
They were like saints preparing to enjoy communion, the tranquil atmosphere merely for the sake of ritual, and now they couldn't wait any longer.
And I am Holy Communion!
On April 24, 1987, I only stayed in the insect room for one day. I was in a coma for the remaining six days. My magic eye was successfully activated. I had an indescribable feeling. It seemed that I could see everything more clearly, but my eyesight did not improve.
On May 5, 1987, my younger brother was born. His name is Matou Shinji. I don't really like him because I feel he's a substitute, and he doesn't have any magical talent. As for the Tohsaka family's child, he doesn't seem to be in good health, and Uncle Kariya sent him a lot of tonics.
On June 17, 1987, with the help of the Magic Eye, the progress of the three categories of magic—alchemy, divination, and curses—was rapidly advancing. The previously obscure knowledge became as simple and clear as a third-rate detective novel, and the identity of the criminal could be identified with just a glance.
Magic tricks? They're a piece of cake!
I need to learn something more advanced, so I'll start with that magic trick. With my talent in the spirit summoning system and these deconstruction magic eyes, I'll gladly accept the magic trick from my previous life of spirit summoning!
August 13, 1987. What the hell is this thing? It's such a thick book, full of useless long-winded articles. The only useful part about this magic trick is a few sentences, which still contain ritual content.
"At 3 a.m., in a closed and dark room, draw a magic circle according to the ritual diagram using a mixture of mercury, pure water, sulfur, and magic gem powder. Place magic candles at the seven nodes of the magic circle, but do not light them. Then lie down in the center of the magic circle."
Place a piece of amethyst on your forehead, a piece of red tourmaline on your chest, and a piece of blue chalcedony in your mouth. Wait for the candle to ignite spontaneously. Whether the candle ignites spontaneously is the symbol of the success of this spiritual communication.
I understand the principles, but this ritual diagram is the most basic application of spirit possession magic.
The materials chosen, mercury and magic gemstone powder, are to better link the magic, while sulfur and pure water are used to control the evaporation and toxicity of mercury.
The seven candles are simply to correspond to the seven chakras of the human body; amethyst amplifies the spirit, red tourmaline strengthens the body, and blue chalcedony enhances spiritual communication.
Is it really possible to summon one's past life just like that?
Are you sure you're not possessed by some wandering ghost? That old ghost was alright; he didn't take over your body, but instead taught you a couple of moves, and you're already treating him like your past life?
September 1, 1987. All that's missing from the materials are red tourmaline and blue chalcedony. I asked Uncle Yanye to bring some back when he came back, I wonder if he still remembers.
If all goes well, I can start trying that magic trick tomorrow. Although there is some risk involved, what do I have to be afraid of?
I accidentally used up all the magic while making a magic candle, and now I have a terrible headache. Are there bugs crawling inside? Damn it!
On September 3, 1987, the ritual was successful. I was not possessed by any wandering ghosts, but my memory was very vague. I only vaguely remembered that in my "previous life" I said two words: "fate" and "zero".
Damn it, this ritual has drained my magic again. There must be a worm in my brain, that damn worm!
