Chapter 117: The Unexpected Windfall
Chapter 117: The Unexpected Windfall
After taking care of the wild Terra Beasts, Raiden and his team rushed towards the base of the tree to collect their mission target, the Red Dandelions.
"Let’s not waste any more time here. Our fight from the previous time already attracted too much attention. We need to leave now." John commanded calmly as he led the team back to the base at full speed.
Thankfully, on their way back, his worst fears didn’t come true, as they reached the military base camp peacefully without encountering any other danger on the way.
"Finally!! We made it back alive!!!" Jonah exclaimed happily as she collapsed on the bean bag in their base, with both Sydney and John doing the same thing as fell down unceremoniously.
Other than Raiden, everyone’s nerves were wound really tight. They only dared to relax after they reached their home base.
"Phew!! I really thought I was going to die today!! Thank you, Raiden, thank you, Woolie. If not for you two, I don’t think I would have made it back home today." Jonah spoke her heartfelt words. She had been on missions like this before, but never came this close to death like she did today.
"Agreed. Thank you, son-in-law." Sydney’s somewhat cold voice echoed out in agreement, as she nodded at him.
Considering this was the first time she had spoken to him directly, Raiden considered it a huge progress.
"Yeah, man, thanks to you, we are alive right now. Makes me wonder who the true Gold-Tier Battle Master between us is." John joked a little before his face turned a little serious as he looked towards his 3 teammates.
"Cadet Jonah, Cadet Sydney, and Cadet Raiden, thanks to your efforts, we were able to finish our mission and go above and beyond the objectives. This mission is considered super successful. You guys can rest for now. I’ll go and turn in the flowers as well as report the mission details."
"Yay!!" Jonah cheered after hearing his words, while Sydney just raised her hand silently in celebration, mirroring Jonah.
A smile appeared on Raiden’s face after seeing the cheerful atmosphere. John had already left the barracks to them as Raiden made his way towards his new temporary home under Jonah’s lead.
The base wasn’t very big, so they quickly reached their destination.
Looking at the corridor with the same wooden doors and patterns on both sides of the corridor, Raiden realised it might be similar to a school dormitory.
"Pick the third door on the right, it’s your room for now, where you can crash for as long as you want. Of course, you can go home anytime you want, but most of us prefer to just stay here and do missions since it’s a hassle travelling back and forth from the city." Jonah explained as she opened the door in front of Raiden, leading him inside.
It was a very small and cosy room with a double bed, a table, and a chair. There were also some potted plants sitting on the window next to the table, giving a sense of greenery. Other than that, the room looked very plain, giving off a sense of minimalism.
"Not bad." Raiden praised naturally.
"While it’s no 5-star hotel, the room is decent enough and using the watch you have, you can basically order anything you want, and it will be delivered to your room in 15 minutes, be it food or anything else. I’ll be in the adjacent room. Just holler at me if you need anything, okay? See ya!"
Bang!
She slammed the door as she left Raiden alone in his room, going to get some well-deserved rest.
"Woolie!!" Woolie was the first one to take advantage of the empty room, jumping directly on the bed.
"Fuck, another bed broken..." Raiden paused in his speech as he was instantly stunned speechless. Ever since Woolie evolved, his weight has increased drastically to a few hundred kgs, and he has broken three beds already at home by jumping up and down on them.
But under Raiden’s surprised look, the bed stayed firm as ever, not even moving an inch.
"Sha Sha !!" Seeing Woolie having fun alone, Neva couldn’t stand it and jumped on the bed together with him, having fun playing.
Raiden jumped on the bed with them, joining them in having fun. After having a bit of fun, he picked up Woolie in his hands and looked at him seriously.
"You did a good job today, Woolie. But next time, don’t show so much power, ok? Be more lowkey. Lowkey, you understand?" Raiden shook his body a little, making little Woolie dizzy.
"Woolie!!" No way, human!! You can shake Emperor Woolie’s body, but you cannot check his determination. I will always give every fight my 100%. The Emperor doesn’t do low-key.
"Sha Sha!!~" Big brother is so cool!!
Looking at the starry-eyed Neva, who was admiring this rebel and the arrogant sheep, Raiden felt his blood pressure rising.
"Damnit, you little sheep, that’s called a strategy, a strategy you understand?! I understand you are on a crooked path, but don’t lead Neva there with you, you ***"
"Woolie??" Woolie tilted his head to the side in confusion.
Raiden only earned a confused look from Woolie, who was looking at him like he had just said the most absurd thing.
Seeing his attitude, a wave of defeat rose from within him.
"Sigh. Never mind it. Let us check the reward for this mission and order some food for both of you." Raiden sat on the bed and clicked on the watch, which brought up a holographic menu in front of him. He clicked on the unopened message in front of him.
[Congratulations, Raiden!! You have completed your mission and earned *****]
Looking at the number in front of him, Raiden couldn’t help but curse.
"What the-"
--------------------------
"You are telling me you have completed your first mission successfully?" The mature woman with red hair questioned the guy in front of her in a commanding tone, who stood there in a military standing position.
"Yes ma’am!!"
"So, let me get this straight. You and your team went on a normal, simple routine mission."
"Yep."
"But you encountered a danger equal to Class 4 in the wilderness, which almost meant certain death, turning into a suicide mission."
"Yes."
"But instead of dying, you are telling me that the new guy saved your asses and he alone fought more than a hundred Terra Beasts, including a Gold Tier Terra Beast, who led a small beast tide??"
"That’s about the gist of it, yes."
"And now that same guy has created the historic high record for his first mission in the base, and everyone wants to know who this mystery person number 27th on the leaderboard is??"
"You guessed it all correctly, boss. As expected of you!!" John flashed a thumbs-up towards her, causing Isadora to rub her head, which was already brimming with a headache.
"I understand. You are dismissed. Thank you for your report." Isadora looked at the scene recorded by the band on John’s hand, showcasing Woolie fighting the hundred Terra Beasts all alone.
Looking at the powers he had displayed, she had all but confirmed the guess in her heart that he had gone Nuclear.
She already had this hunch when he evolved in the stadium during the final match, and when she saw that image of a giant wolf flash in her eyes, but looking at it once more, she had all but confirmed it.
Only a Nuclear gone Terra can command such a power, no one else.
"I have picked an excellent guy for my daughter. He is really outstanding. But sometimes, I fear he is too outstanding, so much so that she might not be able to handle the pressure. Can you do it, my sweet little daughter?"
Just as Isadora was stressing out with this puzzle, she felt another presence in the room.
"Hmm?? You are still here?" She questioned with a cold voice, making John sweat a little.
"Ahem, boss, it’s nothing much, I just had a question I wanted to ask..." John asked in a quivering voice,
"What is it??"
"Well...is it true that Raiden, that newbie, is your son-in-law??" He asked somewhat fearfully.
Hearing his words, Isadora paused a little, her gaze turning weird as she threw a glance at him, which was full of a gossiping heart.
"I never realised that my subordinates were so interested in my family’s private life." A shiver ran down John’s spine as he heard her words, which were equal to an indirect admission.
"It’s not like that, boss!! I-I—"
"Get out, now!!"
"Yes!!"
"That brat is actually serious about it, huh. That’s a good thing. Since you jumped into the pit yourself, don’t consider that you can get away now."
She looked at the Top Ranking List, which recorded all the Battle Masters who fought on the frontlines and ranked them on the basis of merit.
Here, at the 27th rank, a completely new name had made its place, shocking and surprising everyone.
[Rank 27th: Raiden Ashford: 26,643 AP]
